This is the first teaser photo of Subaru's new Forester station wagon, enhanced by photo editor to reveal more of the new car to you. The 2009 model is set to be revealed at a presentation to press next month. The countdown will end on 22nd or 23rd December, depending on your time zone.

Historically offered as a load-lugging big brother to the Impreza, the Forester is an award-winning crossover utility vehicle which grows in height, width and length for the new-generation. The Forester was spotted earlier this year disguised as an Outback and chiefly revealed these new dimensions and new cues seen on this teaser photo.

Check back in less than a month's time for the official unveiling. Until then, you can browse our Subaru category and check out Subaru Japan's countdown page.

I am a Subaru fan. I have a new one and a really old one and love them both. But the current and future design direction is puzzling. What made them cool in the states was the 'outdoor-ed-ness' of them (where i live Outbacks are everywhere), as well as the independent quirkiness of the fast Imprezas. This new Forester is the complete opposite of what people love about the current model. Same goes for the new Impreza. And don't get me started on the new Pacifica/Tribeca front-end. Subaru...I want you to succeed. Make cars we want please.

I couldn't disagree more. I've always loved Subarus for their handling and engineering, but think their styling excesses were wretched: the two-tone cladding, gold-tone badging and boy-racer tack-ons still make me cringe. At least I could buy a nice clean Legacy wagon without all those ridiculous cues - and I've owned three, a '90, '96 and '05. Now that the Legacy wagon has departed, Subaru's only offering the Outback for wagon duty. If this new Forester isn't a clean, sleek stunner, I'll be shopping my next car at a Volvo dealership.

Apparently a 2.0 diesel will make its way under the hood for European customers as the current Forester was only offered in a petrol variant
