VW's Secret Mid-Engined Sportscar Touted

But will Porsche allow it?

Someone told the boys over at Autobild that Volkswagen Scirocco is not the end of story. In fact, it may be the beginning of the VW badge’s sporting plans of the future. Already we have Scirocco but in addition there is the Passat coupe cabriolet. Now another two-door is making its way into the fold and VW plans to place its source of go in the middle, just like the Audi R8 and Lamborghini Gallardo.

Said engine will not be oversized but you can bet your last bratwurst it will have force-feeding (or even double) to make things that more interesting. Cabriolet versions as well as R-badged special editions will appear as well. Drive will be provided by the trusty front wheels and VW’s 4motion, assisted by the new 7-speed DSG gearbox. Of course a manual is also on the cards for the enthusiast who refuses to give up. We’ve used the Concept R from 2003 as an illustration but as soon as renderings and spy pics show up you’ll know.

Guys, this is the R Concept since like 2006 on the VW site, no the actual they're talking about, he says it in the end, so don't use this as an idea fo what it'll be like...

VWvortex watermark says IAA 2003 - as originally mentioned in Thami's story

This article is badly researched... If a the car is supposed to have rear-mid mounted engine, it cannot have front wheel drive! I have yet to see a rear engined front wheel driven car... As for a probable Boxster-based VW, that's old news, but I doubt they'll ever build one. People complain that Porsche will not let them build it. Well, if VW can't price it well below the Boxster, and EOS's price is a good indicator, the car is as dead as it gets... Think about this: what would you have, a VW or a Porsche for the same money!?

First, it IS possible for a rear-mid engined car to have front wheel drive... even tough it would be absolutely useless. And second, in the article it clearly says that the car would have 4motion (that is, VW's 4 wheel drive) Rear-mid engined sports cars with 4 wheel drive? Lamborghini Murcielago & Gallardo, Audi R8, just to name some.

This is correct, there are mid-engined front wheel drive cars (Citroen DS, amongst others). However today this makes absolutely no sense. I seriously doubt VW would do something that stupid. Whatever they decide however, given likely power outputs I'm sure it will more likely be a concern for Audi's TT rather than Porsche.

If you guys took some time to read the whole comment properly, you would have realized I was talking about a "rear engined front wheel driven car". I know the "cannot have" might have thrown you off but apart from that I think I was pretty clear. Why are people trying to look smart by nit picking other people's comments? Like I'm doing now :p

I was like "mid-engined FWD, WTF?"

by benz_man | July 26, 2008 12:37 AM
now the only thing we need is a decent price ;p

WCF, Passat CC doesn't mean Coupe Cabriolet, it's a 4dr saloon albeit a little curvier, unless they are actually planning a soft-top Passat and you know something we don't know???

wills2007, you're dead correct. It stands for Comfort Coupe

I love this car. Hopefully it comes to fruition and not another great design by VW go down the tubes.

Ne1 remember the VW W12 concept sports car from the early 2000s? that thing was crazy, should of made that.

by radmeister | July 26, 2008 3:16 AM
Oh yes, I do remember that concept car. It was not only insanely expensive to build, but also to sell. VW decided to scratch the project.

This car, I will give two thumbs up to. But again, let's see what Volkswagen will do. These chums do know how to make wrong decisions more than once.

Cheers!
