Rendered Speculation: Toyota/Subaru FR Sports car

Cost-cutting and consolidation in the motor industry is forcing players like Toyota and Subaru, alliance partners, into sharing parts not necessarily best suited for their intended purposes. In spite of this, development of Toyota’s Subaru-based sports car, the FR, is gaining much-desired momentum. Word is, bosses at Japan’s numero uno have decided on the final shape of the car and we are lucky enough to have Best Car magazine lead the way, so to speak, in offering renderings of this front-engined rear-wheel-driven sports coupe. Toyota owns a minor stake in Subaru’s parent company Fuji Heavy Industries.

FR is described as possessing a “wonderful style” as far as looks are concerned. It’s a car based on a shortened Subaru Legacy platform whose suspension system has been identified by Toyota engineers as being “weak and terrible”, again, meaning good for a family car but not entirely suitable for a 200m sprinter. Nevertheless these die-hards have vowed to work on it until it handles like a real sports car. Not the best solution but when budgets are tight you have to make do with what you have.

Solid and proven, the 2.0-litre four-pot boxer with power of 190 PS (187hp), aimed for a 200 PS (197hp) production stage, is to be fitted. Accompanied at the hip by a 6-speed gearbox, it should carry itself well enough in the 1200kg (2645 lbs) body. Fuel consumption is always a concern and Toyota hopes not to have to reduce power by too much for the sake of frugality, but that possibility is fast turning into a probability even at current oil prices.

Now you tell us, if indeed FR turned out very close to this look, would you pick that over Nissan’s future 370Z?

BMW 3 series rear end. LOL! Sadly, I'm loosing faith in Subaru and Toyota. There is no REAL Impreza, and Toyota dropped all there Sports models. Now that they have come up with something, it looks ugly. Mitsubishi and Nissan are the only cool Japanese manufatures these days.

Whoops, forgot Mazda too. =)

Nahh, this this it not the real car, looks like a bad combination between a Tvr and a Hyundai cuope.

by M.V.P. | October 23, 2008 12:03 AM
It has the same design style as a higly used soap bar...

by ShinyG | October 22, 2008 10:08 PM
bits of ferrari 599 aswel, front end. the blue car looks alright, the grey one is hideous!!!!!!!!!

by munch997 | October 22, 2008 10:09 PM
I hope this is not the new supra. This concept looks to have more or less the same wheel base as the tiburon. And even the body style reminds me of it.

They really should come out with one that more or reless resembles the supra, (long wheel base with a low nose)

This just looks horrible.

Blue one is spectacular, only what would be expected.

Grey one is weak sauce... very "green" age inflated, bloated piece of combined Japanese effort for a money grab. [puke].

MORE COOL than Ferrari california XD

by _M7_ | October 22, 2008 10:38 PM

This is what I would imagine an exige built by MG to look like

by NISMO | October 22, 2008 10:46 PM
look at the side window line and compare it to this: http://www.zcars.com.au/images/fisker-karma1.jpg it's just another stupid rendered speculation... let's wait until we get the real renderings from toyota.

Good spot! Yep, this is just a nerds fantasy. Nothing to see here!

by bristol411s3 | October 23, 2008 1:54 AM
A mixture of aston martin and hyundai coupe XDDD

by xarlyn | October 22, 2008 10:50 PM
Zero originality in design.

I do not like comparing the design of future cars to existing cars because always will you see commonality in design. It is an amateurish practice. But when you reveal a design that looks like the product of an Elise knocking up a pro-life 599, I can't help myself. I don't think I can begin to list the dozen or so reasons why I already dislike this car, safe to say its timing (being completely inappropriate) and its design (see above) are on that list.

by Bremen_Koenigsegg | October 22, 2008 11:15 PM
Well I'm going to be in the minority and say that I like it. It may look like a F599, but when it's only got a 2L 4 cylinder boxer, such style is not often seen. Still, it's only a prediction and I'm convinced that Toyota and Subaru will be able to make something good out of it (even if current Toyota and Subaru models look bad!). This won't be a family car like the rest of their current line-up so maybe they have something special in reserve.

The idea of an FR Subaru boxer makes me wish I could afford a track car!

Hate to say it but the Hyundai Genesis Coupe I saw in person a few weeks ago has more character than the car in the 3 point view rendering.

by schizo0223 | October 22, 2008 11:48 PM
I am surprised no one mentioned; "IT LOOKS LIKE AN R8!!!!"

No, the front end looks more like the current Lotus Elise more than anything. I too say that there is absolutely no originality in design on this car's exterior. But then again, keeping in mind the origin of this car's home country...

by nurchus | October 23, 2008 12:04 AM
What's that supposed to mean?

by Decypha | October 23, 2008 2:45 AM
The one in the 3 point design looks like it should be the next celica coupe, not the supra...

by yas609 | October 23, 2008 12:26 AM
If it's ridiculously cheap then this one any day!

Else I'd go for the 370Z because the Toybaru is already a "low budget" car while the Nissan has more attractive points.

As always the WCF cynics are alive and well and talking shite... If Toyota don't have a sports car everyone's critical, now that they are having a go again - same same. Anyway how often does "rendered speculation" tun out to be just that - speculation. Until we get an "official" look at these things we won't fully understand what this vehicle is all about. Be sure of 1 thing though, when these cars do arrive we all know that even if they arent the prettiest cars on the road , the value , quality and reliability we always get from the No.1 Japanese Manufacturer in the World will be assured. Asside from anything the Blue car looks Great!

by kmayb | October 23, 2008 1:12 AM
This is one very ugly 'speculation' image... yet with Toyota's recent offerings, we can only hope this does NOT become reality... maybe Subaru will come to thier senses and makes sure the real car is a lot better.

Peace!

by Alfafox5 | October 23, 2008 2:26 AM
Ferrari 599 as someone mentioned earlier with Lotus headlights?

by kevoluetion | October 23, 2008 2:34 AM
yup, even got 599 mirrrors!

by munch997 | October 23, 2008 11:59 AM
Can't say I would be surprised; nothing coming out of Toyota's design house has been amazing and recent Subaru's (impreza cough cough) look like turds with shiny mags.

Guess I should reserve my comments for when the official pictures come out huh?

Great article Thami

Black car looks like crap! Gotta be a Toyota!

by 9TNine | October 23, 2008 2:12 PM
599 wannabe i mean the toyota sign in the middle ruins it and it sucks seriously..

by uae300 | October 23, 2008 4:33 PM
it looks like a bug!!!!!

by shaahinMT | October 23, 2008 9:18 PM
whats up with the ford zx2 front end?

by EJ255 | November 10, 2008 2:32 AM
In my opinion Toyota needs a 370Z fighter and a GT-R fighter. It has stake in Subaru so they need to do some good with that stake instead of making the Impreza look like it got into a fight with a Corolla and lost.
