[UPDATE] Official images and press release added

When the upcoming Ferrari California, unveiled at the Paris Motor Show earlier this year, was said to come only as a cabriolet, one could have assumed the new F430 Scuderia was going to stay a coupe. That would have been wrong.

The Ferrari F430 16M Scuderia Spider has arrived in honor of Ferrari's 16th constructors championship F1 title last week, with a retractable hardtop roof that will subtract 80 kg of weight from the standard 430 Spider. But that may not impact performance very much since the Spider will feature Ferrari's new super-efficient, dual-clutch 7-speed transmission, which will further maximize power-management. The same transmission is also set to debut in the California, and the Scuderia also has the California's same powerplant -- a 510hp 4.3-liter V8. But while the California puts the horses under the front bonnet, the Scuderia is a true mid-engined performer.

Ferrari is to build 499 units of the Scuderia Spider, as the F430 16M Scuderia itself has been limited to that number as well.

Do be aware that Ferrari's assembly plant in Maranello only produces about 27 cars a day -- just a tad over 6,000 a year. Exclusivity is the mark of (and limitation is the price one pays for) opulence.

Special series Scuderia Spider 16M unveiled at World Finals in Mugello to celebrate Prancing Horse's 16th F1 Constructor's title

Scarperia, November 9th 2008 - Ferrari has chosen to unveil the new Scuderia Spider 16M at the World Finals in Mugello in celebration of its recent victory in the Formula 1 Constructor's World Championship 2008. This new high performance sports car features the very best of Ferrari's latest mid-rear-engined 8-cylinder technology. In fact, the Scuderia Spider 16M is faster round the Fiorano circuit than any other Prancing Horse open-top road car yet built. This truly evocative special series model, of which just 499 unique examples will be produced, is aimed at the most passionate clients, drivers who demand both exclusivity and superb driving pleasure.

The Scuderia Spider 16M is available in a choice of two new signature colour schemes: the standard version is black with grey trim, while a tricolour livery is also available as part of the Carrozzeria Scaglietti Personalisation Programme. The new car also sports a special plaque on its rear grille commemorating Ferrari's 16th Constructor's World title. The exclusivity of the interior is underscored by the silver "limited series" plaque just above the air vents at the centre of the dashboard. Other exclusive features include a roll-bar with carbon-fibre outer shell and a specific new generation audio system that can be combined with the removable customised Ferrari iPod Touch 16 GB with central dock just in front of the dashboard.

From a technical point of view, this car has a dry weight of 1340 Kg (80 kg lighter than the F430 Spider). This, combined with the 510 hp provided by its V8 engine and a power-to-weight ratio of 2.6 kg/hp, means that it delivers blistering 0-100 kph acceleration in just 3.7 seconds and a superb top speed of 315 kph.

A new section dedicated to the Scuderia Spider 16M, complete of technical specifications and images is available online at www.ferrariworld.com.

I don't know why they are so proud of this F1 title, as to go name a car in it's honor. they made some really embarassing mistakes that made them lose the drivers championship. McLaren wes clearly the best team this year (though Hamilton was, also clearly, not the best driver)..

well anyway, I wonder who'd still buy the normal F430 Scuderia now..

by loki | November 9, 2008 3:08 PM
I don't usually come on forums to start arguments but your comment is truly dumb. First off, Ferrari still is, the number 1 team in Formula One's history with the most championships won, including the most won consecutively. Second, they lost this years championship by ONE POINT! (98-97). What exact "embarrassing mistakes" are you speaking of? How is Mclaren "clearly a better team" when they won by a SINGLE POINT? Seriously guy, don't hate on Ferrari, they got street cred and a long F1 list of championships to back it up.

by wickedated | November 9, 2008 10:21 PM
wickedated, he was referring to the pit lane incidents and mock ups whic happened this year on a number of occasions. But.. no if or buts, its done and dusted.

by 122 | November 11, 2008 4:22 PM
pointless for the track great for idiots@.

by mmr66 | November 9, 2008 4:33 PM
get one then as soon as possible

by addflavor | November 24, 2008 7:14 PM
I just threw up in my mouth

by iconic | November 9, 2008 5:08 PM
would be interesting how the normal scuderia performs compared to this one with the new duble clutch system

by pousa13 | November 9, 2008 5:43 PM
Design is good, just the car is useless. The Scuderia coupe it meant for the track because it's light. the Canvas mechanicals will double it's weight (ok, not literally.)

by Tuner_Mad | November 9, 2008 5:47 PM
I thought Ferrari is back with the Scuderia, but now it seems they lose their soul again

by MTC | November 9, 2008 6:31 PM
this seems like SUCH a pointless exercise... why bother trying to make a lightweight track car, then lop off the roof so that it needs it's chassis strengthening, thus adding weight again? this car is for posers and nothing more

by sub39h | November 9, 2008 6:35 PM
what is the point?

by kimbo | November 9, 2008 6:40 PM
DID ANY ONE ELSE NOTICE? if you look closely at the pictures of the interior, especially the one with the steering wheel and the one of the red car from behind/top, you can see that instead of a radio it has an iphone holder, you can clearly see the icons/network on the steering wheel pic, and the slider on the picture with a horse on the phone.

by janobr | November 9, 2008 8:29 PM
lol, right.. i did notice that there's and iPhone/iPod touch instead of an stereo... classy...

by davegt | November 9, 2008 10:13 PM
...idiots who like fish tacos! She's gorgeous. The point is, if you're a guy and can't get a girl, here's your solution! If that doesn't work then there's just no hope for you.

by RobERob | November 9, 2008 9:25 PM
Umm... about that, you can just get a MUCH cheaper F430 spider, and that will still get you girls. This car has no purpose to exist.

by Tuner_Mad | November 9, 2008 9:52 PM
Lmao na it wont get you no girls , i mean if you're a loser you're a loser but w.e. it's not even the point , the point is that if i dont track the car but just liek the way it looks, and i want a droptop for summer , and it still performs much better than reg f430 , i would get it you know , not every1 is buying a ferrari to track it , you can buy porsche for that =]

by dolcegabbana | November 9, 2008 10:10 PM
Here's the purpose for this car= All 499 limited editions have already been spoken for, and Ferrari just made a cool profit which will be used for further R&D. It's all business for Ferrari. I wouldn't mind one of these in my garage either.

by wickedated | November 9, 2008 10:25 PM
Pfff, GT-R is faster around the Ring

:-D

by Get_Real | November 9, 2008 10:48 PM
... get real!

by effington | November 10, 2008 1:44 AM
and we care.....why?

by Lucifa | November 10, 2008 11:16 AM
Don't care if you care. If GT-R beats a GT2, it also beats this and this is even more expensive. Ferrari is not holy! By far not, they are hideously overpriced.

by Get_Real | November 11, 2008 11:16 AM
i do hope that maybe one day u'l grow out of this teenage obsession with the GTR... the difference between this and the gtr is that in 5 years it wont be just another jap import that yet another council worker will strap four million turbos to to say its the quickest thing ever... nobody cares!!! i mean look at the gtr, then look at this... if you could somehow get your GTR beer goggles off you'd see that this looks a hell of a lot better... which is the point of this!

by effington | November 13, 2008 6:02 AM
I'm not even a GT-R fan, it was just an ironic remark because it's funny that only Porsche is being compared while the GT-R is actually also faster than 'holy' Ferrari but they are 'untouchable'... But irony is maybe a bit too difficult for some.

by Get_Real | November 15, 2008 7:50 PM
Ugh, how come no pictures of it with the hardtop on? I think that thats a very important issue, cuz without it it looks hot, but for example the F430 Spyder looks like ass with the top on...

by zdenda20 | November 9, 2008 11:07 PM
OOoooh and I love the Italian flag stripe..very classy, loves these little details plus it goes back to the Challenge Stradale!!!

by zdenda20 | November 9, 2008 11:09 PM
GT-R GT-R GT-R, big wow. The Ferrari has something the GT-R will never have, heritage and flair. The GT-R may be fast, but its all computers, and its ugly. This on the other hand, pure Italian sexyness. Can you imagine the sound this stallion makes...

by 911fnatic | November 9, 2008 11:56 PM
For me the hardcore nature of the Scuderia doesn't sit well with the poseur-focused Spider. Could this be the M3 Convertable for the chap who clearly has more money than sense? A sad reflection on who Ferrari are building cars for these days, perhaps also echoed with the California.

by bristol411s3 | November 10, 2008 12:00 AM
I still maintain this car won't have a retractable hardtop. Does anyone see it? Does it make any sense in a lightweight racer? Could it possibly fit in the firewall between an engine and the seats? I still say it'll be a soft-top. The iPod/iPhone jack made me sick in my mouth too, as if Ferrari isn't being nerdy enough already. Still, as usual, all units have been accounted for. I'd still have the coupe.

by motorjedi | November 10, 2008 12:11 AM
those wheels are kinda ugly way too thin. And why do you want a convertible version of a car that was meant to be for the track. Convertible = more weight. This one is purely for the poser crowd

by TRDartz | November 10, 2008 3:42 AM
The front brakes are MASSIVE all that carbon 0_0

by KKS | November 10, 2008 5:37 AM
what is wrong with all you haters? if you have the money and if you want a brand new ferrari convertible for next spring, would you buy a California or this Scuderia Spider?

by M! | November 10, 2008 7:45 AM
The California. Because that's a roadster, a GT car. Because convertibles are for cruising in the summer, not breaking lap records. There is no such thing as a convertible track car and I think Ferrari are kidding themselves and their customers by pretending this one is.

by motorjedi | November 11, 2008 2:01 AM
(I suck at colours btw) The charcoal/grey 430 looks very good but I dislike Ferrari all the same so...

by Decypha | November 10, 2008 9:56 AM
It doesn't have a retractable hardtop. If it did, Ferrari would be showing it off...all pictures are top-down for a reason...it is the same ugly canvas top. Besides, there just isn't any space for a retractable hardtop in the existing space behind the firewall. Most likely, the moron who wrote this article doesn't know squat about the subject and is confusing the retractable hardtop of the California for the Scud...

by Scud-1 | November 10, 2008 10:03 AM
Ever since the Cali was announced with a folding hardtop, WCF has maintained, yes, the Scud will have it too. I'd like to see this.

by motorjedi | November 11, 2008 2:06 AM
just for inforamtion. on the official ferrari homepage it says the scuderia spyder is equipped with the normal 6 speed F1 gearbox, not the double clutch system

by pousa13 | November 10, 2008 11:14 AM
The tech spec in the press release, which you can access above the comments, indicates it does have a dry dual clutch. It would be interesting to see comparative results between the dual clutch and the original super-fast F1 in the coupe.

by scud-1 | November 10, 2008 6:49 PM
hey I know that but a visit on Ferrari´s own homepage tells different story. will be very interesting what now really will be installed and how the two systems will compare to each other

by pousa13 | November 10, 2008 8:30 PM
whatever.

by politz | November 11, 2008 12:13 AM
The only other reason why you'd buy this over the cheaper F430 spider is because theres a shorter waiting list..
