Volvo & Saab Request Aid from Swedish Government

GM and Ford are petitioning the Swedish government to aid their Saab and Ford brands respectively

US automakers have turned into some pretty bold panhandlers. First, Chrysler's current owners decided to sue former proprietor Daimler for 7 billion US dollars because of 2007 losses that they think Daimler should eat instead of them. Strangely, that is the same sum they are seeking from a possible US government bailout. Now, GM and Ford have gone to the Swedish government in search of cash for their ailing Saab and Volvo brands, respectively.

Panhandling is maybe a crude way to put it but it does seem that the Big 3 have gone haplessly scrounging for quick cash without a real strategy for securing new capital or a comprehensive plan for the kind of radical restructuring the companies desperately need.

The Financial Times is reporting that Saab Managing Director Jan-Ake Jonsson and Volvo CEO Stephen Odell have both talked to Sweden's industry minister, Maud Olofsson and made requests for aid.

The Swedish government is considering a 2 billion Krona (248 million US, or 195 million euro) bailout for the Swedish auto industry, in the form of direct aid or loan guarantees.

US lawmakers, still considering a 25 billion dollar bailout for the Detroit automakers, are weary of giving money to the industry that may be used to prop up operations outside of the United States.

Volvo lost $458 million US dollars for Ford in the third quarter of this year. Saab has never made a profit since GM first bought a stake in the company in 1989.

Actually he is smart, Volvo is a good car, very safe and with a good looking, well the design is a bit conservative, but overall is a very good car.

So? he is a middle age guy, not a 20 years old, at he's age, Volvo looks good.

Well another reason he buys them is because nobody loves them in Russia, so he isn't afraid of them being stolen, he has stock anti-theft system on all 3! While he has a satellite alarm system for my car (Golf GT)

And yeah, GM and Chrysler should disappear for sure.

They were sold to americans so they need help now. Sweds should buy them back an sell to Europeans. Renault is a Volvo buyer for sure but in this economic reality the act itself may be just delayed. Saab could be interesting offer too I suppose.

People may argue the history of profitability for both Volvo and Saab, as neither have ever been huge cash makers, however, I MUCH preferred these lines prior to their sale to the U.S. companies. At least in the past they seemed special in some way. I understand that all brands must move forward and evolve with the times but I miss the specialness that they used to have.

To build back the cultural specialty, these brands had once, will be an uneasy task. World is changed and that sense or "touch" of culture is gone or barbarized to the nothing. "Born in same shop with DRAKEN fighters" like things were truth as they are far awy from it now in GM SAAB printed twaddle unfortunately. Saab was my favourite car then, years ago but not anymore. Same happened to Volvo.

Good. European automakers should never merge/be bought by American car companies, look @ how Chrysler almost destroyed Mercedes-Benz. Saabs use to be such very cool cars, and then GM came along and fcuked that up by killing the hatchbacks and bringing in the... *twitches* 9-7X. As for Volvo, well they kept most of their... "coolness" but yeah, They should be bought by the Swedish, just like Aston was bought by the Brits and Merc by... well... the Germans.

One word to all you Volvo/SAAB haters, if it wasn't for SAAB GM wouldnt have the ecotec line of engines, Ford wouldnt have the safety and all the safety gear if it wasn't for Volvo. The S60-R is better than any sedan Ford offers, and the Black Turbo-X is the coolest 4 door sedan from GM. I hope these companies split from their retarded american parents and join europe again.
