Ford CEO Mulally Driving to Washington DC in Escape Hybrid

Willing to work for 1 dollar a year

Ford CEO Alan Mulally will make a 9 hour drive from Detroit to Washington, D.C. in order to make a second plea for aid in Congressional testimony this week.

Last month, the Big 3 CEO's of the US automotive industry, representing Ford, GM and Chrysler, were roundly criticized for each taking their own company jet to the nation's capital to plead for aid for the ailing industry. Lawmakers did not have the votes to pass a bailout measure then but did give the industry a second chance to make it's case again this week.

But Congressional leaders, even those friendly to a bailout for the industry, are demanding detailed restructuring plans from the automakers as a pre-condition to government help. The industry is asking for 25 billion dollars in low-cost loans that they say they need to keep operating through 2009 and avoid a collapse.

As part of their restructuring plans that will be submitted to Congress today, the CEOs of both Ford and GM will say that they'll work for 1 dollar a year if they get the bailout money.

Chrysler CEO Robert Nardelli said in Congressional testimony last month that he would be willing to work for 1 dollar a year if that would help the company secure a bailout.

As the industry scrambles to satisfy lawmakers' demands, even the UAW, the union that represents US auto workers, has said it is willing to re-open contracts with the automakers and make concessions needed to keep the industry viable.

Ford is also promising to speed up the introduction of green vehicles, including new hybrid models and full electric cars and vans as part its restructuring plan.

Ford has also stated that it is considering giving up its five corporate jets.

18 hours of Drive for a person of his stature is a waste of Tax Payer's Money. With his current salary and perks, he costs $13000/hour to Ford. He should just take a Business Class ticket in any regular Flight. Why be an extremist, first fly a private jet and next drive in an economy Hybrid. common... you can do better.

One more thing... Big Three CEOs should contribute to the company from their personal assets they accumulated by making huge money over the past years even as the companies were not doing well and selling assets to make ends meet. Ford CEO makes 27.1 Million/Year. GM CEO makes 15 Million/Year.

Perhaps an eighteen hour drive in one of his company's production vehicles would make him notice what is lacking in the company's North American vehicle offerings. Ford (AND Chrysler AND General Motors) currently offer competitive highly efficient vehicles in EUROPE! Why companies did not reinvest profits(when they were flush) on R&D or Marketing to bring excellent vehicles like the Opel Insignia, Ford Kuga, KA, or European Fiesta to the USA is TOTALLY beyond my comprehension. I am convinced that digital communication and advanced technology makes global product planning, production, and marketing more efficient and effective than ever. So, who is responsible for the debacle - and why should we taxpayers prop-up such obviously flawed business models and practices?

This is too little too late, after they went there on their private jets and got asked if they would consider working for 1$/year and they said no, now they go there in a hybrid and will accept 1$/year....Congress will see right through it. I will also bet he is working for 1$/year but taking the rest of his salary in shares like the guys from Google.

I believe that his "salary" will be $1, but I note that he did not state that he would forego any bonuses or stock options. He's not stupid! How else would he have gotten to be CEO at Boeing or Ford? Smart guy! (And $$$ RICH $$$!)

Make the bset use of your time, all CEOs. Don't waste your time in transportation, spent more time with your team, to come up with a strong market strategy, to regain market sharing, to provide reliable and economic products, and most importantly, to get your reputations back.
