Cosworth wins FIA standard engine tender in 2010

Un-badged Cosworth engine option will be 2m euros

Cosworth has won the tender to supply a low-cost engine and transmission package in 2010 and beyond, formula one's governing body announced on Friday.

In the wake of Honda's shock departure from the sport, the FIA said in a statement that the news confirmed its fears about the current financial format, and sent a letter to team bosses.

It is revealed that the cost to teams wanting to use the un-badged Cosworth engine option will be 2m euros, plus 5.5 million euros each season.

"The annual cost will reduce if more (than four) teams take up the option," FIA president Max Mosley wrote.

Teams not wanting to use the standard engine have "the right to build an engine themselves", or a de-tuned version of their current 2.4 litre V8s, but must use a standard transmission supplied by Ricardo Transmissions, a British company.

Mosley said the measures will help small teams survive, and also pave the way for the replacement of more outgoing manufacturers, "as seems likely" to be necessary.

He wants four teams to sign up the scheme by next Thursday, or the price may go up.

Bye bye F1. Killed by a blend of bad luck, a global economic downturn and absolute greed and short sighted stupidity by Max Mosely and Bernie Ecclestone.

May it rest in peices

I want F1 cars to be turbocharged, with full slick tires!

BMW and Toyota will go next.

by stillthewhizz | December 5, 2008 4:51 PM
Maybe that's what Ecclestone and Mosley mean by a single engine supplier - there will only be one team left in F1 by 2010!!

Mind you, I still dont see Ferrari wanting to use a Cosworth engine even if they are the only team left on the grid!

"Teams not wanting to use the standard engine have "the right to build an engine themselves"

...and thats the option Ferrari, BMW, Mercedes etc will probably do.

If ever, small teams would most likely use the Cosworth engine.

Won't they need to change the rules to use that engine? The picture shows a V8 turbo. Formula1 dot com reports that: "The engine will be based on the current V10 specification, while the gearbox will be an all-new, state-of-the-art unit."

how is Ferrari gonna deal with this. I mean they have always been a company that bangs on about soul and make one of the best engines in the world.... If they accept this then..... I just dont wanna think about it. F1 is officially dead it has become another willy wally regulated race series.

Max Mosely and Bernie Ecclestone YOU SU*K CUPLE OF G*Y ASSH*LES ...YOU HAVE DESTROYED THE F1 ONCE MORE!!! I HOPE YOU BOTH DIE SOON

OMG this sucks SO bad! F1 has always been about technology: who can make the best chassis, the best engine, the best package as a whole. Now that they're standardizing everything, it is becoming a boring race series where no one has a speed advantage over the other competitors. And with the 2009 aerodynamics rules the cars are f**king ugly!

F1 really needs to roll back to the rules of the 70's where all kinds of funny things were allowed. I'm not watching the 2010 series if they all really are using the same engine, that's for sure.

Mosley and Ecclestone have just killed the most exciting motorsport series. THANK YOU A FU**ING LOT!!

exactly, F1 teams of manufactures used to be an inspiration for auto manufacturer, foe example the V10 engine in the road going BMWs or flappy pedal gearbox or torsion bar suspension from 70s or exhaust tuning or many other auto-engineering. with this new rules the auto manufacturing technology is going to stop as well as the F1 sport.

by audinick | December 5, 2008 11:13 PM
his wife took over F1 with the divorce setllement

by audinick | December 5, 2008 11:14 PM
once we lose the fans, we lose the sponsors, lose the sponsors lose F1. Can't Mosley see that? it's not only the teams who are furious but also the fans as well. the reason people cheer for different teams in F1 is because their cars are different and philosophies to better their machines etc give each team their own personality. but not anymore :(

"...must use a standard transmission supplied by Ricardo Transmissions, a British company" So waht do you reckon World Car Fans, is it Max or Bernie with a family member amongst the higher ups at Ricardo? Bet that both bought extensive shares of this company before this announcement.

by phobos | December 6, 2008 11:15 AM
bernie did only two good things in his life - his two beautiful daughters... and nothing else. i also think he has to go, and while packing, he should take max with him. as walter from the jeff duhnam show says: "dumb asses!"

It is going to be a very boring season in 2010. A control engine will ruin the race. Bye bye F1 for me in 2010.

by American-Rules | December 7, 2008 12:53 PM
What is the point for car manufacturers if they cant use or develop the technology.... it ruins any 'halo effect' F1 has. I say get rid of any rules... allow anything, then it would be truly interesting.... little teams that came up with something truly innovative could beat big budget teams.
